The Rev. Dr. Wallace Ryan Kuroiwa

Wally Ryan Kuroiwa earned a Ph.D. from Emory University, Atlanta, in 1983; an M.Th. Degree in ethical studies from Duke University Divinity School, Durham, N.C., in 1976; an M.Div. Degree from Golden Gate Seminary, Mill Valley, Calif., in 1970; and a B.A. degree in philosophy from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, in 1966.

He served churches in Hawaii, North Carolina, Ohio, New Mexico, and Arizona.  While serving Nu’uanu Congregational Church in Honolulu, he chaired the Task Force on Apology and Redress Committee for the Hawaii Conference.  The task force was instrumental in the denomination’s 1993 decision to make a formal apology and redress to  Na Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiians) for the Church’s complicity in the overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani’s monarchy in 1893.

He served as a corporate board member of the United Church Board for World Ministries, was the Executive Director of the Office for Church in Society, and was Co-Minister and Team Leader for the Cleveland-based staff of the Justice & Witness Ministries.  Along with Co-Team Leader Lois M. Powell, he was responsible for much of the programmatic work of JWM.

Wally is married to Rev. Jayne Ryan Kuroiwa who is pastor of Windward UCC in Kailua, HI.  They have two children. He is avid golfer, voracious reader of mystery novels, and an intrepid world traveler.
